Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) is seeking community input on draft division boundary maps, which are used to elect the District’s five board members. A first public hearing will be held on Tuesday, January 25, 2022. The initial public hearing was continued from January 11, 2022. These hearings are an opportunity for the community to share input to help CVWD better understand its communities of interest and reshape CVWD division boundaries.
CVWD is governed by a five-member Board of Directors elected to 4-year terms by district voters. Each Director represents a division of the district. CVWD’s Board of Directors sets policy and represents the ratepayers. Board member terms are staggered, so an election is held every two years.
CVWD must ensure all divisions have roughly the same number of residents for equal representation on the Board of Directors. As a result of the 2020 census, the boundaries of divisions must be adjusted to allow for equal distribution of voters.
The Board of Directors will hold two hearings to receive public input about where district lines will be drawn.
Upcoming Board Meetings/Timeline:
- January 25, 2022, 8:00 am: Public Hearing No. 1
- March 8, 2022, 8 am: Public Hearing No. 2
- April 17, 2002: CVWD deadline to adopt and submit maps to County Registrar
Public Hearing No. 1 allows for public input on two map options reflecting possible changes to CVWD’s boundaries. Each iteration of the draft maps builds upon the subsequent approved version to ensure equal representation.
Public Hearing No. 2 is designed to review final maps, hear additional map feedback and for the Board of Directors to consider adoption of a new division map.
